What the skin barrier is built from
The lipid structure between your skin cells
The outermost layer of skin is often compared to a brick wall.
The flattened skin cells are the bricks. Between them sits a highly organised mixture of lipids: mainly ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids.
Calling this mixture “mortar” makes it sound passive, as though it simply fills the spaces between cells. In reality, its structure is much more precise. These lipids arrange themselves into thin, repeating layers around the cells of the stratum corneum. Together, they create the part of the barrier that slows water loss and makes it more difficult for irritants to pass in.
Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids
Collagen is often treated as the main structural material of skin, but it sits much deeper in the dermis. The barrier at the surface is built differently: from flattened cells surrounded by carefully organised lipids.
Each lipid contributes something different. Ceramides form much of the structural framework. Their shape allows them to organise into densely packed layers that help make the barrier resistant to water movement.
Cholesterol gives those layers flexibility. Without it, the structure can become too rigid and less able to adapt as skin bends, stretches and responds to changes in temperature.
Free fatty acids help determine how tightly the lipids pack and support the acidic conditions in which the barrier functions best.
The presence of all three matters. So does the way they are arranged.
A skin barrier is not created by adding one fashionable lipid to the surface. It depends on a complete mixture, produced in the right place, processed by the skin and assembled into an ordered structure.

How skin builds its own barrier
Skin builds this continuously.
As new cells form in the deeper epidermis, they begin moving towards the surface. During that journey, they change. They flatten, lose their nuclei and release lipid precursors into the spaces around them. Enzymes then convert those precursors into the ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids found in the mature barrier.
By the time the cells reach the stratum corneum, they are no longer living cells in the usual sense. They have become part of a protective structure: corneocytes surrounded by carefully arranged lipids.
What disrupts the skin barrier
That process is always taking place. But it does not always proceed at the same rate, or under the same conditions.
Age can change lipid production and processing. Cold weather and low humidity can increase the difference between the amount of water skin loses and the speed at which the barrier can recover. Cleansing removes oil, dirt and sunscreen, but it can also disturb some of the lipids at the surface. Irritation, inflammation and repeated over-treatment can affect the enzymes involved in building and reorganising the barrier.
Usually, skin compensates. It detects disruption and begins repair. The difficulty arises when disruption happens more quickly than repair.
The lipid layers become less complete or less well organised. Water escapes more easily. Skin may begin to feel tight, dry or unusually reactive. Products that were previously comfortable may suddenly sting. The surface can look rough, while underneath it feels as though it never quite settles.
Why hydration alone is not enough
These changes are often described as a lack of moisture. But water is only part of the picture.
A barrier can be given water and still struggle to retain it. Humectants may increase hydration temporarily, but hydration and barrier organisation are not the same thing. For water to remain in the skin, the structure around it must also be intact.

Supporting the conditions for barrier repair
This is why barrier care cannot be reduced to telling the skin to renew faster or adding another active ingredient.
Sometimes the most useful approach is to work with the skin’s own processes: reduce unnecessary disruption, support the surface with compatible lipids and give the skin time to restore its natural organisation.
